MY PROBLEM WITH FEMINISM

problem-feminism

The dictionary defines feminism as the advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes, which basically means men and women are equal in every aspect, be it political, educational or employment wise. Over the past 30 years many women have emerged as strong advocates of feminism, women like Angelina Jolie, Coco Chanel, Madonna, Oscar Wilde, Maya Angelou,Beyonce, Emma Watson, Kim Kardashian, Oprah Winfrey just to name a few, these women are referred to as feminists. I don’t have anything against women wanting and fighting for equality but I do need to highlight certain peculiarities with the “feminist movement”.

1. Too many ideology

On one side you have women like Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, Madonna who believe that being a feminist means they can expose their bodies the way they see fit. This group donot believe sex demeans women, if a man can sleep around and not feel degraded why should a woman? They tend to push the boundary of sexuality with their provocative dressing. You only have to be on Kim’s Instagram page to know what I mean, it’s full of nude pictures of various kinds which is her way of exhibiting freedom as a woman. We have another group of women who believe that being a feminist means not taking shit from any man, they are against dressing in a provocatively sexy manner, women like Oprah Winfrey, Maya Angelou and Chloë Grace Moretz.

Wikipedia has it that Chloë Grace Moretz’s has turned down film characters that exhibits sexual awareness and acute nudity; which means on one side we have feminists who believe embracing their sexuality and sexual liberty is a way to champion the cause of feminism while on the other side we have feminists that believe showing too much of them self or being sexualized is demeaning. It’s like if you decide to be a feminist today you have to choose which kind you want to be like you’re choosing which political party to belong to, I mean that’s just confusing isn’t it?

I feel like the word feminism should be well stated and defined so there won’t be this kind of confusion.

2. It shouldn’t apply to everything

A while ago in the world of tennis some women fought for the right to be payed the same as their male counterpart, despite the fact that in grand slams, men play 5 sets(some epic matches last 5 hours) while women play just 3 sets (epic match lasts 3 hours) LOL! it’s more like saying a janitor and the director of a company should be paid the same salary just because they’re both black after all equality is equality, but common sense says he who works harder should earn more so I wonder why feminists play the sexist card every chance they get even when it doesn’t warrant so, if it were to be a woman being paid lesser for the same position for a man despite doing the same work I wouldn’t even mind marching for that cause but this case isn’t like that, just as everything is not about race or ethnicity, everything shouldn’t be about feminism.
