The picture of the traditional wedding which took place at Isioziakah in Njaba LGA of Imo State last week was something that caught a lot of attention and eventually broke the internet.
I was mesmerized by the display of affluence and the way the party went. The picture of how the journey of the two lovebirds also caught my attention. It is not always easy to have been through so much with your man for many years, so I kind of understand if you want to spare no blushes in having a much talked about wedding. I wanted to make a pass about these pictures but it gave me sleepless nights that I would want to just state my observation about the apparent display of wealth.
I know a lot of ladies out there would be praying for such kind of wedding and wishing that the kind of family they get into is one filled with affluence. However, I would like to state that, isn’t it a little too indecent the way we treat the Naira? We usually complain of hardship and the pitiable and dwindling economic situation of the country, yet see the extravagance display of wealth. This is not actually to chastise the newly wedded, but it is to chide our disregard for the Naira and the unnecessarily display of affluence.
Look at the foreign countries that we claim to imitate and try to differentiate how they portray their currency and display wealth. Is it by creating a pool of notes scattered all around the floor? What if a group of notorious individuals decide to take advantage of the ceremony to perpetrate something unpleasant?
While wishing the newly wedded couple happy married life, I believe it would be pertinent to look beyond the ‘show’ and deride this unacceptable behavior.
Mind you though, it is their money and they may decide to spend the way they like. I am only concerned and stressing that we need to look beyond showing off wealth publicly in this manner and try to respect our local currency when we commence a show of ‘i am wealthier than thou’.
What do you guys think? Will you like to do this on your wedding day? The Naira as your footstool and your pathway? I’d love to have your thoughts on this.

May 25, 2016 at 12:24 amI can never have this kind of spraying spree on my wedding. Put the cash in an envelope. Simple. We don’t value our country, why should we value the naira? Until we come to this realisation that we need to value everything about Nigeria including her currency and work in accordance, then we would have sense.
