Health related reasons
There are tons of health issues out there, most curable and others incurable, the reason why most Nigerian couples opt to have an abortion is because of the mother’s failing health, in this instance, the mother might have been suffering from an illness that makes her tired all the time or she might be an individual who cannot endure pain even for a minute. Asides this, HIV has been the number one health reason why people abort in the name of health reasons. If it has been figured out that the baby is going to carry the disease, the best way to end future ordeal is to do it right now in form of abortion as an average Nigerian family cannot afford to foot the medical bills of suppressing the virus in her system let alone that of the new born.
Single Parenthood
This is just a term coined for a very broad topic. Heinous crimes are being committed on a daily basis in today’s world. In most criminal attacks, women are the primary and main target as they are perceived as the weaker vessel.
There have been countless cases of unplanned pregnancy as a result of crimes such as incest, child abuse and rape. In these instances, the stigma and the probability of the father being absent in the life of the newborn is a driving force for the victims to opt for abortion as Nigerians are very much concerned with social goodwill i.e. what the society will think of them if they have a baby for their rapist, unknown attacker and a known family member.
Unacceptable quality of life
Abortions of this type are at a very low rate as Nigerian health facility centres are not equipped with the technological advancements to know whether a foetus is deformed or not. Coupled with the fact that Nigerians are religious, they believe in whatever unseen entities they worship to perform a miracle by turning the deformed baby into a totally normal one. Some of the couples who have found themselves in this kind of situation just don’t care, all they want is to just have a baby they can point to as theirs, whether deformed or not.
Social reasons
This is definitely like a tree as it has its own branches. The top on the list in these category of mothers are the poverty stricken ones. Often times, couples who cannot afford baby materials and the bills that comes with raising a child opts for abortion as they themselves are not living a comfortable life just yet. Some of the parents in this category are plain callous while others are just being considerate by not wanting to bring a baby into the world to grow in hardship and an environment where he/she will lack basic needs that other children flaunts.
The second on the list in this category are mothers who simply can not cope with another child, in this case, the mother(s) might be career women with a lot to do and adding a kid to the equation will only mar her progress in the business world. Another thing that might have happened is the presence of kids the couple considers too much already. A mother of five with another kid will definitely grumble because the stress that comes with looking over one is just enough to wear a full grown adult out, let alone six vibrant children.
The last but not the least in this category are the teenagers:
Teenagers do get pregnant in the course of having fun, teens in this kind of situation are mostly young school leavers, undergraduates and in some cases, secondary school girls who have been wayward from the onset. These social reasons are the motivation behind why foetus of intending mothers in this category are eliminated.
Government Policy
Nigeria is a country with a population of over 60 million people and that number keeps shooting to the sky as the day goes by. In the future when Nigeria has fully developed into the dream country, measures will be put in place to curb the teeming number of the population. One of the measures proven to have been effective in developed countries is forced abortion, this will definitely make thousands of intending mothers consider going under the knife to evacuate the foetus inside of them as they do not want to go head-head with the government.
Gender selection
In Nigeria and other countries where the advancement in technology can help reveal the gender of your foetus weeks after settling down in the womb, couples who want a specific gender of kid now make more informed decisions as they terminate a pregnancy that is not expected to be the gender they are looking forward to. This mostly happens when the parents prefer to have genetically superior children that will help forge the family ahead, carry on the family name and help with the family business for when the parents are to old to get involved in matters of that nature.
So just because you type in the ‘i need an abortion’ word on Google yet again, here are the reasons to not consider an abortion in Nigeria;
Criminal Offense
As much as abortion has been legalized in some European countries and the pressure being mounted on Nigeria will not go away anytime soon, the giant of Africa is yet to legalize the practice and aborting your baby either by a doctor or self prescribed pills can keep you behind bars for good 14 years if convicted in a court of law.
Health Hazards
Due to the unsafe way abortions are being carried out in Nigeria, a lot of health challenges may arise after getting rid of the baby, the top of the line is pelvic infections whereby germs from the vagina manages to get through to the uterus during the abortion thereby causing an infection in the pelvic area, this infection can, on mist occasions be treated with antibiotics, in severe occasions, there is need to go under the knife in order to correct the anomaly. Heavy bleeding from the private part is another complication that might arise from having an abortion, the best way to approach this is to ask your doctor for advice on what to do. Scarred tissue is the last abortion related health hazard we are going to treat, this is no ordinary scar, it is one on the uterine wall caused by the growth of scar tissue in the uterus, this complication in most cases can lead having no menses at all, miscarriages in the future and infertility.
Stained Conscience
Having an abortion has a religious person stains your conscience as all of the holy books in one accord stands against abortion, every time you remember you have once murdered a baby knowingly, there is this regret that comes along with that flashback.
Emotional Breakdown
How different women cope after having an abortion totally varies and no feeling is ever the same. No matter how good you feel after getting rid of the unplanned foetus, there will always be lapses and instances where you would go back in time and wish you had never aborted the baby.
So, this is all about abortion in Nigeria, You have an unwanted pregnancy, it is important to know that you made your life choices on your own and so should bear the consequences. Is aborting that cute baby the best decision for you to take? The choice is YOURS.

February 16, 2018 at 5:25 pmIt is better to use protections (condoms) than having to deal with abortion on the long run.
