What is the meaning of Ramadan Kareem?

As soon as the glorious month comes in! You begin to hear people say Ramadan Kareem. This is a statement used by Muslim, non-Muslims all over the world to welcome Muslims into the month of fasting. You should note that ‘Ramadan Kareem’ can be used instead of Ramadan Mubarak as it means ‘Welcome to the glorious month of Ramadan’.

Why do Muslims fast during Ramadan?

Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, which comes with the Muslim declaration of faith, charity, daily prayer, and traveling to Mecca, and it usually comes up during the holy month of Ramadan. The holy month of Ramadan is usually the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, different from the normal calendar month that we experience and use for our day to day activities. The Islamic month is characterized by the tenets and principles as dictated by Islam and the Quran. The Muslim faithfuls around the world observe what is known to be intense fasting and prayer during this period. This will happen from dusk to dawn with nightly feasts at the end of each day’s fast!

In Islam, the principal way of bringing yourself closer to God is through fasting and prayer. This is said to bring Muslims closer to God and to remind God of his promises to the Muslims faithfuls. The fast also avails the Muslims to spiritually sanctify and purify themselves of all sins and atrocities.

This period also provides the opportunity for Muslims to remember the less privileged by giving out freebies and feeding the hungry during the period of Ramadan.

What is Ramadan for?

Ramadan is marked by daily fasting from dawn to sunset. Here total abstinence from food, drink and water. It is a highly-revered period where Muslims are expected to adhere strictly to in all its totality. For 30 days, Muslim faithfuls all over the world pray and abstain from smoking, drinking, fighting and all manner of bad behaviours and social ills.

What are the expectations for non-Muslims during Ramadan?

You want to join in the Ramadan fast? Feel free and join in. Ramadan is not only opened to Muslims alone, even non-Muslims can join in the fast, and pray for holiness and spiritual cleansing.

If however you decide not to join in, the least you can do is wish your Muslim brothers and sisters happy Ramadan Mubarak or happy Ramadan Kareem. You can do this by vocal greetings whenever you meet them or send some of my happy Ramadan Mubarak wishes as you deem fit.

This way, you are showing care and thoughtfulness during the holy period of Ramadan. I am sure the Muslims faithfuls will appreciate your show of concern as well.
