The little we know about Chinua Achebe

Taking up the responsibility to tell Nigeria’s story to the world is no small feat, and this Chinua Achebe did by writing an amazing book that told the world the story of Nigeria.

Albert Chinualumogu Achebe was born on November 15 1930 in South Eastern Nigeria village of Ogidi to parents Isaiah Okafo Achebe and Janet Anaenechi Iloegbunam. He had his Education at the Government College in Umuahia and later proceeded to the University of Ibadan for his tertiary education where he graduated in 1954.

A Nigerian professor, novelist, poet and critic, his first book was Things Fall Apart (1958) and and his last novel was Anthills of Savannah (1987). Till today, Chinua Achebe is still considered as one of the most important modern writers.

Chinua Achebe started his writing journey in 1950 by putting together his story telling abilities by using the Igbo settings in his books. His books brought out the traditions of the Igbo, the village life, the criss cross story of Nigeria in terms of culture, tradition, civilization, and political dispensation.

He weaves his characters around the village chief (Remember Okonkwo in Things Fall Apart), the school teacher in A Man of the People and the priest in the Arrow of God. This is one great story teller whose books will live for generations.

Mr Achebe died in March 2013 having lived 82 years on earth. His life had him win so many accolades which included the Man Booker International Prize in 2007.

Google Doodle and all of us therefore celebrates what would have been this amazing novelist’s 87th birthday today. Happy Birthday Chinua Achebe.
