In Nigeria, the importance of culture and tradition as regards rites like marriage cannot be overemphasized. Different ethnic groups in the country have different rites and traditions as related to getting married and enabling marital consolidation.
Culture is ingrained in our very existence; from our social affiliations, societal, and educational value, the role of culture is huge and very important.
In recent times, the role culture has to play in marriages, especially from the Eastern part of Nigeria has been called into question. This is judging from the exorbitant list of items created by the bride’s immediate and extended family to which the groom must return with all items listed therein. Paying for the items in the list may set prospective grooms back financially as some of these items are exorbitant and outrageous.
A Twitter user, Sam Hart, shared this unbelievable list for Traditional Marriage as requested by the family of the bride, and we have not gotten over the shock of the items listed.
